Anne Maryken’s career has not been a textbook one. After obtaining her Law degree from the Free University of Amsterdam (VU), she was active in the corporate sector, the judiciary, a union organization and at present she teaches Law in higher education. However, through the years she has always combined these activities with creativity in fine art.
During her student years Anne Maryken developed skills of graphite drawings based on intrinsic inspiration. After graduation she changed her focus to figure drawing and moulding with live models. For quite some years she developed further skills: in etching as well as in the techniques of working with ceramics.
All the acquired knowledge and skills now are combined in the figurative sculptures of bronze and resin she has created in more recent years. She does work by commissions as well as out of her own personal inspiration. Her drawings in graphite and/or Conté à Paris soft pastels often form the starting point as a source of inspiration. But she also gets inspired by forms, lines, suggestions, expressions that emerge out of the clay in her hands.
In its simplicity her work is felt as powerful and expressive. This is also what she aims for. She calls this: “the search for the ‘fourth dimension’”. Sometimes this fourth dimension solely consists of “movement”; another time it consists of showing the essence of who or what the initial model was. Often this search leads towards work that doesn’t express an unequivocal essence, which allows the observer to give it his/her very own interpretation.
Thus, Anne Maryken’s work has the capacity to touch people. As a counterbalance in these times of diminished empathy and commercialization, it appeals to feelings of gentleness and openness of the spectator. An important personal motive for Anne Maryken. In this way she strives to contribute to a world a touch better and more beautiful.Opleidingen2019- heden Academie voor Schone Kunsten, Arendonk (België)
